Saga Luna

is a mixed media artist on a journey of inner alchemy; exploring art as a gentle process for transmuting and integrating shadow. Her work is narrative, a visual transmission of the feminine experience seen through an archetypal lens.

She combines natural elements such as wood, seed pods, and silk with objects associated with women’s roles such as washboards, spindles, and rhinestones, all while exploring themes of transformation and devotion with at least a teaspoon of whimsical curiosity.

Many of Saga Luna’s paintings are first drawn with fire, a process called pyrography. She loves the unpredictable nature of the collaboration between human and the element of fire. As an alchemist, she knows... the magic of transmutation requires the heat of the flame, and if you forgot your matches, a brave and passionate heart will do.

Saga lives in Northern California with her two favorite artist co-creators (her husband and daughter) and their familiar, a mini poodle called Juju.

Welcome! Thank you for your interest in what I am playing at in this wild enchanted forest that is my imagination. My devotion is to creating beauty, expressing my heart, and learning to love all the parts of me. This path has led me to the mysteries of inner alchemy where I have been exploring the process of transmuting and integrating my shadow through artistic expression.  Read on to learn more about my process.

Follow me down this Rabbit Hole…

Hello Beauty,

Art as Alchemy

Transmutation is the act of changing something from one form into another.

This is what alchemy is. The process of bringing light to those shadowy places of the self holding unconscious patterns and programs, running the show from behind the scenes. It could also be the definition of making art. The Inquiry became, could I do this inner work through my art making?

How This Magic Works

Creating a physical, mixed media representation of the pattern or part of self I am transmuting allows me to witness the story I am shifting within- from an outside perspective. It keeps me focused as the witness.

Some pieces begin with their title, some with physical objects I find interesting or beautiful, and others are simply an idea I keep tripping over in my mind. Then… something will ask to be made.

Much of this process is highly intuitive, swimming through the mystery while staying in trust. Oftentimes, the magic and purpose of each piece only becomes clear– even to me— towards the end. My higher self gets her “Ta-Da!” moment, which she absolutely loves. The finished piece reveals parts of myself that were hidden away or harder to reach while honoring them with beauty and holding them in love.

Visual Transmission

Another of my art practices ~and the way I have been creating my paintings~ is to become a channel. The practice is to stay out of the way and allow what wants to come through the pencil onto the paper as a visual transmission. I may have a seed of an idea to start with but I never know what the finished piece is going to grow into.

Drawing with Fire

The illustration then gets transferred and burned through a process called pyrography. I absolutely love this process. It puts me in a trance. The collaboration between human hand and the element of fire adds a unique, expressionistic quality to the artwork, as well as an extra dose of magic to each piece. I have found a line burned rather than drawn creates an enchantingly organic illustration, rich in texture and character.

& Curioser

…and then there are my musings

These three-dimensional mixed media pieces are whimsical experiments, and tend to look like fairytale curios. They are often a response to a “What if? or What would?” question such as “What would those hearts kept in glass caskets~ hidden away in the forest for safe keeping ~look like after so many years?”

These pieces combine natural material elements– such as seed pods– with found objects like glass eyes or vintage beads from my headdress making days.

Before I wandered down this artistic path, I spent over a decade making adornments out of beautiful vintage and antique materials. These are also one of a kind mixed media pieces, but wearable. You can find examples of these at www.mataharisdaughter.com if you find yourself curious.

Magic Mirrors

The reason I am able to do any and all of this is because of the support I receive from two brilliant artists… who happen to also be my husband and daughter, Mike and Charlotte Reynolds. They are my co-conspirators, collaborators, and magic mirrors offering reflections, fresh eyes, and the unwavering love, that keeps me on my path and calls me home when I’ve wandered too far off of it into the dark forest.

This website is a collaborative labor of love and I am so grateful for all the time my beloveds put into helping me create it. The beautiful montage films showcasing the fine art prints were shot and edited by Charlotte as well as much of the still photography. My darling husband, Mike, is responsible for all the wonderful digital designs you see in the shop.

Thank you for visiting our magical world. I look forward to receiving any reflections you may have if you wish to contact me.
